What role can the standards play in your makerspace?

How do you unpack standards to inform your makerspace planning?

How can you address standards in your makerspace?

Sometimes educators are hesitant to incorporate close curricular ties in their makerspace because they are afraid it will limit creativity, but it is possible to connect your makerspace to standards without losing the essence of what GREAT makerspaces should be. Opportunities in your makerspace for students to invent, tinker, create, make, and do can allow students to develop skills and demonstrate learning outcomes addressed in standards. An easy way to make those connections is by using I-H-R.

I = Identify: Identify the standards you want to make connections to.

H = Highlight: Highlight the nouns, what the student should know—the topics. This declarative knowledge will help you determine the concepts you want your students to retain.

Highlight the verbs/verb phrases, what the student should be able to know—the skills. This procedural knowledge will help you determine what processes your students need to demonstrate to meet their learning goals.
